georgia? Where is your common sense?

You can't be serious Georgia. A 17 year old Georgia teenager and honor student, Genarlow Wilson, has just been sentenced to10 years in prison for his conviction of Aggravated Child Molestation for a consensual sexual
act with another teen. A Douglasville, Ga. hotel new years eve party that spiraled out of control... underage drinking, underage sex, and videotape. A recipe for trouble indeed. But sadly, not all that unique for teenagers. Hopefully media attention will not die down on this until he's free from prison.
acquited and then convicted
Initial charges of raping another 17-year-old girl were first brought against Wilson and five other teens. The other five teens pled to lesser charges, while Wilson held out and was quickly acquited after claiming the sex was consensual. However, the additional charges were brought after video evidence was found of oral sex between Wilson and his 15 year old consensual "accuser". It wasn't sexual intercourse that got Wilson in trouble, but the oral sex. Wilson's defense attorney claims that had they had intercourse that night, his punishment would have been much less. Georgia law forced the jury to convict as the 15-year old didn't have the ability to consent to sex. This wasn't a 45-year old guy preying on a 12-year old girl. This was two teens doing something they shouldn't have done. But off to prison he goes... 10 years of hard time next to convicted murderers and rapists. What do you think you'll do in the next 10 years? Well, think about the fact that he'll be in a cell that whole time for receiving oral sex from a willing teen nearly his own age. What a massive miscarriage of justice!
Law is for the people... let's stand up against this ridiculous interpretation. A little logic here would be great....
Court transcripts tell the story: (discussion between Wilson and judge)
Wilson Genarlow: "aggravated child molestation is when like a 60-year—some old man like messing with 10-year-old girls. I’m 17, the girl was 15, sir. You call that child molestation two years apart?"
Judge Barker: "I didn’t write the law."
Wilson Genarlow: "I didn’t write the law either."
Judge Barker: "that’s what the law states is aggravated child molestation, Mr. Wilson, not me."
Wilson Genarlow: "well, sir, I understand you’re just doing your job. I don’t blame you. . . . But do you think it’s fair? . . . Would you want your son on trial for something like this?"
Let them know what you think! (don't just pity him - voice your outrage!) |
